Australia’s National Broadband Network (NBN) rollout is a major infrastructure undertaking. It will require a significant workforce of skilled telecommunications workers to design, construct and maintain the network in all regions of the country.
The NBN project will lead to high demand for workers in both existing and new employment functions. An additional 10,000 cablers/data communications and digital installers, plus up to 30,000 new positions in ICT sectors, will be required to meet the needs of digital switchover and broadband rollout. Electricity supply industry workers, including network authorised electricians and lineworkers, will also be needed in significant numbers for aerial and underground cabling work.
In addition to the NBN project, Australia's telecommunications industry will continue to require skilled workers to install and maintain systems in the following areas:
- Cabling (CPE and access)
- Digital reception technology
- Network planning
- Radio communications
