Line Worker Assistant

Line Worker Assistants are responsible for the design of electrical distribution networks both overhead and underground. They work in the tram and train overhead powerline sector of the rail industry. Work may include the installation, maintenance and inspection of overhead poles/structures, conductors and cables and rail traction wiring systems including associated equipment used on these structures.

Personal requirements of a Line Worker Assistant may include:

Line Worker Assistants may complete the following tasks:

  • Operate and maintain chainsaw
  • Apply Occupational Health Safety regulations, codes and practices in the workplace
  • Fabricate, dismantle and assemble utilities components
  • Solve problems in d.c. circuits
  • Fix and secure electrotechnology equipment
  • Use drawings, diagrams, schedules, standards, codes and specifications
  • Solve problems in electromagnetic devices and related circuits
  • Solve problems in low voltage a.c. circuits
  • Apply sustainable energy and environmental procedures
  • Operate plant and equipment near live electrical conductors and apparatus
  • Working safely near live electrical apparatus
  • Install and maintain poles, structures and associated hardware
  • Install and maintain poles, structures, overhead conductors and cables
  • Install traction overhead wiring systems
  • Maintain traction overhead wiring systems
  • Install and maintain overhead traction components and equipment
  • Test and verify rail traction installations
  • Maintain network infrastructure electrical equipment
  • Perform low voltage field switching operation to a given schedule
  • Perform HV field switching operation to a given schedule
  • Conduct visual checking and treatment of power system poles and structures

This career requires prior learning at a certificate level (Electrotechnology). You will also need to hold a Licence to Operate a Boom Type Elevating Work Platform.
