Substation Technician

A Substation Technician assists the Substation Supervisor in the supervision and coordination of substation activities and personnel involved in the construction, maintenance and operation of transmission lines and substations. The Technician is responsible for assisting field crews, overseeing contractor crews and assisting with the daily operations of the substations as directed by the Substation Supervisor.

Substation Technicians may complete the following tasks:

  • Troubleshoot and/or repair AC and DC control circuits using the appropriate test equipment
  • Patrol, inspect and report on substation and transmission line conditions
  • Read and comprehend electrical substation diagrams, maps, blueprints and distribution system drawings, technical equipment operation and maintenance manuals
  • Assemble, install and/or dismantle of all substation related equipment including but not limited to transformers, regulators, switching and metering equipment, relay and control equipment, wire and tubular buss, grounding equipment, steel poles and A-Frames and assist with the installation and construction of equipment foundations and structures, the installation of conduit and control cable
  • Install, program and/or trouble shoot SCADA Remote Terminal Units
  • Assist the Substation Supervisor with overseeing and inspecting work performed by outside contractors
  • Execute switching orders as directed by supervisors and/or Transmission System Operators
  • Work in close proximity of high voltage lines and equipment
  • Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of all tools and safety equipment furnished by NBU
  • Perform general housekeeping, routine maintenance and monthly visual inspection of each substation’s network and equipment and update appropriate log sheets

This job requires an electrical traineeship or apprenticeship plus a relevant number of years on-the-job experience.
