Telecommunications Cabling Worker

Telecommunications Cabling Workers install telecommunications and data cabling and cabling products on customer premises and carrier networks in accordance with Australian Communication Authority requirements under the auspices of the industry registration regime and relevant industry registration bodies, and in line with the specifications of the access network owner.

Personal requirements of a Telecommunications Cabling Worker may include:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Knowledge of current and emerging telecommunications technologies
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to rapidly identify root causes
  • Sound IP Networking skills, including infrastructure such as Routers and Switches

Telecommunications Cabling Worker may complete the following tasks:

  • Follow occupational health and safety and environmental policy and procedures
  • Use electrical skills in telecommunications work
  • Install and test an internet protocol device in convergence networks
  • Use hand and power tools
  • Deliver a service to customers
  • Splice and terminate optical fibre for carriers and service providers
  • Joint metallic conductor cable in Access Network
  • Install, maintain and modify customer premises communications cabling: ACMA Restricted Rule
  • Install, maintain and modify customer premises communications cabling: ACMA Open Rule
  • Apply safe technical work practices for cabling registration
  • Alter services to an existing cable system

This occupation requires a certificate level of skill in Telecommunications Cabling. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
